The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
